Becoming a Minimalist

I have been on the road to becoming a minimalist. I am so far from my goal but I have been able to take slow steps into it. I love the idea of minimalism because its freeing. No longer buying things out of boredom, which I have done my entire life. Saving that money for making memories instead. Being more creative with the things I do have, and actually using them. I subscribe to this site on my facebook, http://www.becomingminimalist.com . He has such wonderful ideas on becoming a minimalist, its a real encouragement.

I have gone through my entire house with what I call “first phase”. I cleaned out every closet, drawer, cabinet in every room and we had to take about 3 loads to our local goodwill. All this “stuff”. The hubby and I are on a mission. One of the last places I needed to go into was my closet! This one is hard since I am a girl and I love shoes and clothes. I am also pregnant so much of that clothes are things I can wear after the baby.

I kept putting it off but finally decided yesterday I would do the “first phase” on it.

I am embarrassed to say I have about 33 pairs of shoes.. Didn’t know that till yesterday.

I went thought only on side of my closet, BABY STEPS. I got rid of clothes I knew I had no interest in wearing even after I get back to pre-baby.

It had to be more than 50 articles of clothing. The picture below is after first phase, it looks like I didn’t even make a dent.

Here is the proof I did take a lot of it out.

I will be going through the other side of the closet, my purses and shoes today. Wish me Luck… By the way this feels great :)

  1. No wonder you bought such a big house – you need a couple of rooms just for your clothes :-)

Keep it up, it feels great and keeps feeling that way.

BTW, do you have freecycle.org in your area? It’s a global site with local implementations. I use it to give away things and also to get some useful freebies (a yogurt maker and sewing machine have helped me in my search for minimalism). Not that I’m trying to do Goodwill out of your bounty, but it’s another way of keeping things out of landfills.

    • I know right, the crazy part is that I accumulated all that clothes after we bought the house. I felt I had to fill it up the space. I have a friend who I will be shipping some of the clothes to, but I have never looked into freecycle. I will check it out.
